report
Ocean
Race – Schull to Glandore – Friday 17th Aug.
The 2007 Schull glandore Ocean
Race started in a fresh northwesterly wind. The fleet of only five boats
set off from Schull Harbour to race to Glandore Harbour at 15.15hrs last
Friday. The favorable winds allowed a good down wind run as far as Toe
head for some. The course took the boats through the Gasconnane sound
leaving Badger Island to port, the next mark was High Island outside Glandore
Harbour, and two and a half hours later the first boats rounding the Sheila
point at the entrance to Glandore Harbour, lead by Sean John Murphy and
Sean O’Riordan’s Y Dream who finished at 17.56 quickly followed
by Vincent Tubbs Kyachtic and George Radley’s Miss Whiplash, the
last boat finished within the hour. This is the third year where the Ocean
race for the Glandore Regatta was run on a Friday, it is a good idea,
it allows anyone who has raced at Calves week one extra regatta in West
Cork before heading back east. Glandore Regattta on a Saturday means that
all Sunday is available to sail back to Kinsale or Cork Harbour.
Glandore Regatta Saturday 18th August
Race Officer Cliff Hilliard
and his race management team set excellent courses for the Cruisers and
dinghy fleets, using in harbour and Glandore Bay sailing marks. Unfortunately
the early arrival of the forecasted wind did have a big impact on the
racing for the afternoon. Because of the small fleet there was an all
in start for Classes I,II, and III and White Sail, the keel boat classes
started with an upwind leg to a turning mark at Union hall. This made
a good spectacle for those watching from the shore at Glandore. Cruiser
starts were followed by the Dragon class who were racing for the Lar Casy
this class had a very exciting class start!
The morning forecast was that for the wind to build in the evening however
the fleet had hardly reached Adam when the wind speed jumped very suddenly
from a 15/18 knot range to a 20/25 knot range, some boats reported gusts
of 35Kts, this made conditions difficult for the Class 3 White Sail and
Dragons, while a number of the Dragons had to retire, the impact on the
dinghy and dayboat classes was more serious and resulted in all but the
Laser Class race being abandoned. The Club plans to reschedule the abandoned
dinghy races in the coming week.

Event Report:
Seventeen Dragons contested the South Coast Championships
but the series was convincingly won by Dublin-based, Glandore native,
Don O’Donoghue in ‘Seabird' he had three first places from
his first four races. He didn’t let up much in the final race either,
finishing with a commendable third.
Weather conditions on Friday made for frustrating racing with light airs
and rain but Race Officer Neil Prendiville got in two races. Interesting
to note that the top three boats for the series were nowhere to be seen
in Race One which was won by Kinsale’s Olaf Sorensen on ‘Pink
Slipper’.
Saturday’s weather at least stayed dry while light airs proved no
obstacle to ‘Seabird’. She took both the day’s races
in spite of a spirited challenge from Andrew Craig on ‘Chimaera’
who had racked up three third placings from four races.
Conditions on Sunday were much better: winds from the east veering to
the south east as the day went on. Martin Byrne sailing ‘Jaguar’
took line honours hotly pursued by Cameron Good on ‘Tatsu’.

Report:
A fleet of 10 boats gathered for the 8.00am start in Crosshaven last Saturday
morning,
A heavy day of southerly winds with very poor visibility and an unsettled
sea made for a fast though uncomfortable passage for the leading boats.
First on the water, was Nadie, sailed by Stephen McCarthy and crew, pipped
to 2nd place Shoot the Bar sailed by Peter Donegan. For the class 3 boats
Domnic Losty and crew of Cobh sailing Club sailing Woody stuck it out
for 11 hours and navegated into Glandore at 17.43 hours in thick fog.For
Sunday’s racing for the Glandore At Home trophies, the Crosshaven
boats were joined by the Kinsale fleet and there were 15 boats racing
in four classes. Principal race officer for the day was Neil Prendeville,
who set an Olympic course SE of the Harnbour entrance. The North-Easterly
wind gave a settled sea and conditions were excellent for the regatta.
After a short postponement Class I&II started with the Class III and
white sail fleet starting promptly thereafter. In Class I Bluebelle of
the Kinsale Club traded places all around the course with Gloves off.
Elsewhere in Class I KYC’s SAMBA was duelling with Shoot the Bar
of Crosshaven, on handicap the winners were IRC Shoot the Bar Peter Donegan
RCYC, ECHO Samba John and Rachael Downing KYC. In Class III Woody was
rewarded for their perseverance on Saturday by winning the IRC Trophy
from Kinsale’s Chameleon. After a good day out, all the fleets were
in from racing by 17.30hrs.
The day’s racing was followed by the usual street entertainment
for the afternoon, an excellent barbeque was available in the Glandore
Inn with Rockin Jerry playing until after dark. The At Home prize giving
took place outside the Glandore Inn at 19.30, Former Ireland Rugby Player
Paul Wallace made the presentations, there were Cups for Class I,II,III
for ECHO and IRC. Prizes were given again this year for the growing White
Sail Fleet in SCORA.
The weekend usually finished on Monday with a 12.00 o’clock start
for the race back to Kinsale for the KYC Crohogue Jug Trophy. There were
4 boats on the start line on Monday morning with one other boat passing
through the start line shortly afterwards.
