NEW YEARS DAY SWIM

Sometime during the winter of 2001 a few GHYC club members thought it would be a great idea to organise a swim to mark the start of 2002. The tide tables were consulted to determine the time of high water and a swim time was selected - the aim being to do the swim in daylight, though not too early in the morning, and as close to high tide as possible.

On Jan 1st 2002 thirteen swimmers took to the water, six of whom are still turning up regularly for the annual dip although only Cait Mehigan, Mary Casey and Patrick Casey have never missed a swim. Over the years the Glandore National School joined us boosting the numbers - what happened to them in 2011?

Anyone who has swam more than once is listed in the main table and people who have only done the swim once are listed at the end depending on which year they swam in.

This year the latest in modern technology allowed Sean Thompson to declare the water temperature to be 7ºc. Sparing no expense we have converted this random number into the more traditional water temperature scale -

11ºc ............ not too bad
10ºc ............ not as bad as last year
9ºc .............. Jeeeezuz
8ºc .............. f-f-f-f-f-freeezzzing
7ºc .............. OMG!
