Club Membership
For insurance reasons, only fully paid
up club members can participate on the courses. Please note that family
membership covers parents and their children, this does not include cousins
who will need to take out junior membership unless already covered by
their own family membership. The ISA requires GHYC to return €16
euros per junior member and only slightly more for family membership therefore,
junior membership is available for one child only; family membership is
required when further children wish to join. MEMBERSHIP: Family €125
Individual €100 Junior €50
MEMBERSHIP FORM HERE
Deductions
There is no reduction for the first child doing the longest/highest course,
after that a reduction of €25.00 applies to a one week course and
€40 euro reduction applies to a two week course and finally €60
to a three week course. No deduction on adult courses or the 4 day Start
Sailing course or on the All- in - Sailing week as it has been applied
already.
Payment
The full fee must accompany the application form.
If there is an error in payment, the form(s) will be returned and course
places will not be held until full payment has been received. Course fees
once paid are non-refundable.
Shore Duty
Junior Sailing Courses are dependent on the help of adult members to provide
any necessary shore support. This mainly involves being a point of contact,
holding the first aid kit and having a vehicle available for any emergency
purpose. Two parents are required for both morning and afternoon sessions,
which overlap to provide safety cover during lunchtime. Please register
for shore duty on the first day of your child’s course. The Shore
Duty Rota is an important safety backup on our courses and it is expected
that parents should cover one half-day session per week per participant.
Volunteers are also required for adult social events, kids social events,
and the Marconi cup organization.

GHYC Sailing
Course Notes and Code of Conduct
• Minimum age for ISA courses is 10 years. • Applicants must
be able to swim 25 meters in their clothes. Swimming test is mandatory
for anyone sailing with GHYC for the first time. It takes place on the
first morning so bring old clothes.
• ISA courses commence at l0am and finish at 5pm with a lunch break
lpm-2pm. Lunch is to be supplied from home. All sailors should be ready
in appropriate gear at course commencement times.
• The club is not responsible for the children at lunchtime. However
Shore Parents will be on hand to provide safety cover.
• Course fees once paid are non-refundable.
• Buoyancy aids and appropriate footwear must be worn at all times
(i.e. no flip flops on the water). Any infringement of these rules means
automatic dismissal from the course.
• Wetsuits are highly recommended for all levels but are not mandatory
(yet). Cold children cannot learn properly, and are more likely to have
accidents. Weather gear, sun and wind protection, should be brought each
day and a change of warm clothing including shoes.
• Jumping off the pier or throwing / pushing anyone off the pier
is strictly forbidden during the course, including lunchtime.
• Through our courses we aim to help sailors improve their sailing
skills in a friendly and fun environment. Any sailor disrupting this will
receive a warning. If the disruption continues they will be dismissed
from the course. • A strict no smoking ban applies during the sailing
course.
• Participants are expected to obey their instructors and adult
supervisors and also to sail fairly, do their best and have fun. While
every effort is made to keep course participants occupied for the full
day, in bad weather conditions it may be necessary to send them home so
a valid phone number is essential.
Student Supplied Boats
Sailors who register as boat-owners must present a sea-worthy boat on
the first day of their course. The instructors will assess boats, and
any boats judged unsuitable for any reason will not be used and the higher
course fee for non-boat-owners will then be charged. If there is no boat
available that they can use then they cannot do the course. Owner supplied
boats must carry appropriate liability insurance.
Boat Damage
If damage occurs to a boat during the sailing course, the party responsible
for causing the damage should cover the repair costs. There are rules
governing liability for damages caused by collisions. If boats are racing
when a collision occurs, then liability is decided on the basis of the
Racing Rules of Sailing. At other times, the International Rules for the
Prevention of Collisions at Sea apply.
PLEASE NOTE: The ISA Level assessments after Start Sailing are challenging,
geared towards sailors who participate in their sport for three or even
four seasons of the year, and for whom it may represent their main sporting
activity. Most of our sailors at GHYC are summer sailors, and many do
not sail at all other than for the duration of their course. For this
reason, it is to be expected that most of our sailors will spend at least
two seasons at each level this is necessary if they are to attain the
standard prescribed by the ISA, and helps them to gain confidence and
skill at a rate appropriate to their actual experience on the water. As
parents, it is important that we explain this properly before they begin
the course, and help them to understand that their ISA courses represent
a learning curve over time, rather than a ladder of tests that they can
expect to pass on an annual basis. The New Structure introduced in 2009
makes this more complicated for all of us but our instructors are happy
to explain to sailors and their parents the rationale of test decisions;
if during the 2010 season, such discussions become difficult, they will
be referred to the Junior committee for resolution.
Please print a separate course application form for each sailor
