| GHYC Sailing Course 2012 : Notes and Code of Conduct First and foremost the purpose of the Sailing Course is to teach juniors how to sail safely and fairly, in a friendly fun environment, but like all activities there are some rules and codes of conduct, to ensure the greatest pleasure for the greatest number .... Club Membership: For insurance reasons, only fully paid up club members can participate on the courses. Please note that family membership covers parents and their children only. This does not include cousins who will need to take out junior membership unless already covered by their own family membership. The ISA requires GHYC to return €16 euros per junior member and only slightly more per family. Therefore, junior membership is available for one child only; family membership is required when further children wish to join. Membership form is attached and the subs are the same as 2011: Family : €125 Individual : €100 Junior : €50 Course fees/Membership Payment: The full fee must accompany the application form. If there is an error in payment, the form(s) will be returned and courses places will not be held until full payment has been received. Once paid, course fees and membership fees are non- refundable. Minimum age for ISA courses is 10 years but some 9 year old will be given places on Taste of Sailing, depending on availability. Applicants must be able to swim 25 metres in their clothes. Swimming test is mandatory for anyone sailing with GHYC for the first time. It takes place on the first morning so bring old clothes. ISA courses commence at l0am and finish at 5pm with a lunch break lpm-2pm. Lunch is to be supplied from home. All sailors should be ready in appropriate gear at course commencement times. The club is not responsible for the children at lunchtime; however Shore Parents will be on hand to provide safety cover. Two shore parents are required per morning (10 – 2pm) and afternoon (1pm – 5pm) session, with an overlap of 4 over lunchtime. This will require that for each participant, a parent will have to volunteer for one shore session per 2 week course. If you are not in a position to do so, then you will need to nominate another parent who can carry out this duty for you. The rota for shore duty will be publicized in advance of the course (on the club website and noticeboards) and on the form below you can request specific day(s) if that is important to you. Remember: both parents can do a session together and that counts as 2 duties ! Adult Volunteers are also required for adult social events, kids social events, and Marconi cup organization Safety comes first : Buoyancy aids and appropriate footwear must be worn at all times (i.e. no flip flops on the water). Any infringement of these rules means automatic dismissal from the course. Wetsuits are highly recommended for all levels but are not mandatory (yet). Cold children cannot learn properly, and are more likely to have accidents. Weather gear, sun and wind protection, should be brought each day and a change of warm clothing including shoes. Jumping off the pier or throwing / pushing anyone off the pier is strictly forbidden during the course times, including lunchtime. A strict no smoking ban applies during the sailing course. Participants are expected to obey their instructors and adult supervisors and also to sail fairly, and do their best in a courteous and friendly manner. Through our courses we aim to help sailors improve their sailing skills in a friendly, fun environment. Any sailor disrupting this will receive a warning. If the disruption persists they will be dismissed from the course. While every effort is made to keep course participants occupied for the full day, in very bad weather conditions it may be necessary to cancel activities and send them home. Student Supplied Boats Sailors who register as boat-owners must present a sea-worthy boat on the first day of their course. The instructors will assess boats, and any boats judged unsuitable for any reason will not be used and the higher course fee for non-boat-owners will then be charged. If there is no boat available that they can use then they cannot do the course. Owner supplied boats must carry appropriate liability insurance. Boat Damage If damage occurs to a boat during the sailing course, the party responsible for causing the damage should cover the repair costs. There are rules governing liability for damages caused by collisions. If boats are racing when a collision occurs, then liability is decided on the basis of the Racing Rules of Sailing. At other times, the International Rules for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea apply. PLEASE NOTE: The ISA Level assessments after the Start Sailing module are challenging, geared towards sailors who participate in their sport for three or even four seasons of the year, and for whom it may represent their main sporting activity. Most of our sailors at GHYC are summer sailors, and many do not sail at all other than for the duration of their course. For this reason, it is to be expected that most of our sailors will spend at least two seasons at each level. This is necessary if they are to attain the standard prescribed by the ISA, and helps them to gain confidence and skill at a rate appropriate to their actual experience on the water. As parents, it is important that we explain this properly before they begin the course, and help them to understand that the ISA courses represent a learning curve over time, rather than a ladder of tests that they can expect to pass on an annual basis. The New Structure in place since 2010 can make this a bit more complicated but our instructors are happy to explain to sailors and their parents the rationale of test decisions. If during the 2012 season, such discussions become difficult, they will be referred to the GHYC Junior committee for resolution.
