Sailing Coordinators The junior sailing committee will post the names of the weekly supervisor and contact number on the notice board on the container at the start of the junior sailing season.

The course is dependent on the help of adult members to provide any necessary shore support. This mainly involves being a point of contact, holding the first aid kit and having a vehicle available for any emergency purpose. It is required that parent volunteers will help with this. The more parents that help, the less each has to do. Please volunteer on the first day of your child’s course. There will be a Shore Duty Rota available for parents to sign for duty, on the first day of each course. Depending on the interest an adult sailing course may be provided during the summer. Please contact Claire Thompson (028) 34676 or by e-mail cntghyc@gmail.com, if you are interested please include approximate dates you would be available and whether evenings or weekend would suit you best, if enough.

GHYC Sailing Course Notes and Code of Conduct

• Minimum age for ISA courses is 10 years. Minimum age for Splash Sailing course is 9 years.
• Applicants must be able to swim 25 meters in their clothes. Swimming test is mandatory for anyone
sailing with GHYC for the first time. It takes place on the first morning so bring old clothes.
• ISA courses commence at l0am and finish at 5pm with a lunch break lpm-2pm. Lunch is to be supplied from home. All sailors should be ready in appropriate gear at course commencement times.
• The club is not responsible for the children at lunch-time.
• Course fees once paid are non-refundable.
• Buoyancy aids and appropriate footwear must be worn at all times ( ie no flip flops on the water). Any infringement of these rules means automatic dismissal from the course. Weather gear, sun and wind protection, should be brought each day and a change of warm clothing including shoes.
• Jumping off the pier or throwing / pushing anyone off the pier is strictly forbidden during the course, including lunchtime.
• Through our courses we aim to help sailors improve their sailing skills in a friendly and fun environment. Any sailor disrupting this will be warned. If the disruption continues they will be dismissed from the course.
• A strict no smoking ban applies during the sailing course.

While every effort is made to keep course participants occupied for the full day, in bad weather conditions it may be necessary to send them home so a valid phone number is essential.
Level 4 sailors may have the optional opportunity of participating in the Fastnet International Schools Regatta for one week of their course. Sailors who choose to participate in the Schools Regatta will not be asked to pay a separate entry fee for the regatta. There may however be a transport cost if parents elect to hire a minibus for transport to Schull. Last time this cost was approx. 30 euro per sailor for the week. Level 4 sailors will also be prepared for Pre-Entry Assessment for ISA Junior Instructor Tests. We are offering Level 4 Racing this year and hope to offer the higher level 4 Advanced next year if there is sufficient demand

Student Supplied Boats

Sailors who register as boat-owners must present a sea-worthy boat on the first day of their course. Boats will be assessed by the instructors, and any boats judged unsuitable for any reason will not be used and the higher course fee for non-boat-owners will then be charged. If there is no boat available that they can use then they cannot do the course. Owner supplied boats must carry appropriate liability insurance.

Boat Damage

If damage occurs to a boat during the sailing course, the party responsible for causing the damage should cover the repair costs. There are rules governing liability for damages caused by collisions. If boats are racing when a collision occurs, then liability is decided on the basis of the Racing Rules of Sailing. At other times, the International Rules for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea apply.

PLEASE NOTE: The ISA Level assessments after Level 1 are challenging, geared towards sailors who participate in their sport for three or even four seasons of the year, and for whom it may represent their main sporting activity. Most of our sailors at GHYC are summer sailors, and many do not sail at all other than for the duration of their course. For this reason, it is to be expected that most of our sailors will spend at least two seasons at Level 2 and Level 3. This is necessary if they are to attain the standard prescribed by the ISA, and helps them to gain confidence and skill at a rate appropriate to their actual experience on the water. As parents, it is important that we explain this properly before they begin the course, and help them to understand that their ISA courses represent a learning curve over time, rather than a ladder of tests that they can expect to pass on an annual basis. Our instructors are happy to explain to sailors and their parents the rationale of test decisions; if during the 2008 season, such discussions become heated in any way, these will be referred to Junior committee for resolution.
